Scorpion Pest Control

Scorpions thrive in hot, arid climates, making them particularly common in the Southwestern United States. These nocturnal arachnids are easily recognized by their elongated, segmented tails, which curve over their bodies and end with a sharp, venomous stinger. The stripetail scorpion  is the most common species in many regions. This yellowish scorpion features distinct dark stripes on its back and typically grows to less than three inches in length. While it does have venom, it is far less potent than that of the bark scorpion and rarely poses a serious threat to humans.

The giant hairy scorpion is the largest scorpion species in North America, reaching up to five or six inches in length. Its dark body is covered in dense hair, which helps it detect vibrations in its environment. Despite its size and intimidating appearance, it is not highly venomous to humans. Instead, it primarily preys on smaller pests, such as other scorpions and centipedes, making it more of a natural pest controller than a threat.

The yellow ground scorpion closely resembles the bark scorpion, with a slender, yellowish body, making it easy to misidentify. However, it is less dangerous and does not have the ability to climb vertical surfaces.

One unique feature of all scorpions is their ability to glow under a blacklight. When exposed to UV light at night, scorpions emit a pale green glow, making them easier to detect in the dark. Using a blacklight flashlight is one of the most effective ways to locate scorpions and assess their presence in an area.

Are Scorpions a Problem?

Scorpions play an important role in the ecosystem by controlling insect and vermin populations in their natural desert and arid habitats. However, when they venture too close to homes and yards, they can become a serious nuisance and even a potential health risk.

Some species, such as the bark scorpion, have potent venom that can cause painful stings, swelling, muscle spasms, and in some cases, severe reactions. While fatalities from scorpion stings are rare, children, the elderly, and those with allergies may experience more serious symptoms that require medical attention.

Unlike other common household pests, scorpions are not frequently found indoors. They tend to roam over long distances in search of food, making them more prevalent in outdoor spaces. However, if food sources are abundant and conditions are favorable, scorpions may seek shelter in and around homes, hiding in rock piles, wood stacks, cracks in walls, and even inside shoes or bedding.
